Shō Poetry Journal is a nonprofit print journal revived in 2023 after a 20-year hibernation. We publish an eclectic range of poetry twice a year and publish audio features on a rolling basis. Since our re-launch in 2023, poetry published in Shō Poetry Journal has been selected for the Pushcart Prize, Best Spiritual Literature, Best New Poets, and the Monarch Queer Literary Awards. We strive to champion voices that have been historically underrepresented or overlooked. Browse a list of our contributors and follow us on Instagram or Substack for updates.

“There are forms of written and verbal communication that I think I absorbed from the carceral environment—the discourses of incarcerated people as well as of their captors and jailors. In terms of the former, I was always taken by the subtle use of metaphor and euphemism. If someone wanted to know when you’d been arrested, they often simply asked, “When did you fall?”

Listen to Dorsey Craft read a poem from her new co Listen to Dorsey Craft read a poem from her new collection, "A Brief History of Accidental Inventions”—out now from @texasreviewpress! Purchase a copy at: tinyurl.com/dorseycraft

This poem was published in Shō No. 5 (Summer 2024).

About this poem: I wrote this poem when my son was around two years old, beginning to go to preschool and leave what I felt like was a sphere of protection around our two bodies. “Rejected Persona” is my (imperfect, clunky) attempt to link gun violence, particularly the 2018 gender-motivated shooting of Maura Binkley and Nancy Van Vessem in a Tallahassee hot yoga studio, to the gun/hunting culture I grew up in and to the fraught experience of mothering a son, a child, in this country. The continuum that they exist on was not always obvious to me, but the more I plumbed the role of guns in my upbringing the more I began to see the connections between the “acceptable” violence of hunting and the atrocities we witness again and again in America. I also began to see the ways in which gun culture intertwines with sexism and, indeed, hatred of women as the horrific shooting in Tallahassee exemplified. In this poem, the speaker considers her proximity to the Tallahassee shooting, the possibility that she could easily have been a victim. She also considers the vulnerability of her small son, not only to gun violence, but to indoctrination to our patriarchal, violent culture.

Dorsey Craft is the author of "A Brief History of Accidental Inventions" (Texas Review Press, 2026), and "Plunder" (Bauhan Publishing, 2020). Her poems have appeared in Blackbird, Copper Nickel, Ploughshares, Poetry Northwest, and elsewhere. She teaches at the University of North Florida and serves as Assistant Poetry Editor at Agni. She is also the co-organizer of @dreamboatpoetry in Jacksonville, FL.
